Il Cambridge Audio 851N è un lettore di Rete che raccoglie l’importante eredità dei suoi predecessori, a partire dal Sonata NP30, che ha introdotto ai piaceri dell’Hi-Res audio tantissimi audiofili (e anche chi vi scrive, a dirla tutta).
Non presenta grandi stravolgimenti rispetto alle funzionalità a cui siamo abituati, semplicemente il Cambridge Audio 851N fa tutte le cose al meglio.
E così troviamo le “solite” compatibilità con UPnP e il solito plotone di ingressi digitlai, solo che qui le porte USB sono ben 3, a far da buona compagnia a una porta coassiale, una TOSLINK e un AES/EBU.
Ovviamente non è tutto: WiFi, Ethernet, Bluetooth e Airplay sono ormai d’ordinanza in qualsiasi lettore di file di livello e anche qui non mancano, così come è ben presente anche Spotify Connect.
L’ingresso USB asincrono principale accetta in ingresso praticamente tutti i segnali PCM fino a 24 bit/192kHz da un PC collegato; l’851N supporta molti CODEC, incluso file FLAC/Apple Lossless/WAV/AIFF a 24 bit/192 kHz, oltre a formati MP3, AAC, HE AAC, AAC+ e Ogg Vorbis.
La scelta di casa Cambridge per questo lettore è quella dell’upsampling di tipo ATF2 (Adaptive Time Filtering di seconda generazione), che sovracampiona in modo intelligente tutto l’audio in ingresso a 24 bit/384 kHz e riduce drammaticamente il jitter digitale.
La generosa alimentazione, con trasformatore toroidale, è contenuta in un case tutto metallico, lo stesso che nasconde ben due DAC AD1955 e che ospita nel frontale un display a colori da 4,3” (11 cm) per le funzioni di controllo e per la visualizzazione delle cover degli album. L’app per IOS e Android, decisamente più comoda dell’affollato telecomando in dotazione, si chiama Cambridge Connect ed è tutta nuova.
